Fade & Taper Guide: skin fade, mid fade, low fade and taper fade explained
Everything you need to know to choose the taper that best suits your style, face shape and hair type. By the barbers at FADED Barbershop, Ciudad Lineal, Madrid.
What is a fade?
Quick answer
A fade is a taper that gradually reduces the length of the hair from the top towards the sides and nape, with no harsh lines. It is the basis of modern men's haircuts.
A fade is a cutting technique in which the barber progressively reduces the length of the hair from the top of the head towards the sides and the nape. The result is a smooth transition, with no abrupt cuts, that gives the hair a clean, defined look.
A fade is not a haircut in itself but a technique that is combined with different styles: quiff, french crop, textured crop, pompadour and so on. What changes from one fade to another is the height at which the taper starts and how far it goes (whether some hair is left or it reaches the skin).
What is a skin fade?
Quick answer
The skin fade (also called a zero fade) takes the taper all the way down to the skin, leaving the sides completely shaved to zero. It is the sharpest contrast between the top and the sides.
The skin fade is the most extreme type of taper. The hair is reduced until it disappears completely at the sides and nape, leaving the skin visible. It is worked with clippers without a guard and a razor to achieve a perfect transition down to the skin.
It is ideal for urban, modern or streetwear looks. It needs upkeep every 2–3 weeks to keep the taper clean. At FADED we do it from 15€.
Low fade vs mid fade: which one to choose?
Quick answer
The low fade starts just above the ear (a low, elegant taper). The mid fade starts at mid height (more contrast, more modern). If in doubt, the mid fade is the most versatile.
Low Fade
- Starts just above the ear and at the nape
- Subtle, discreet taper
- Elegant, formal look
- Ideal for professional settings
- Lasts longer without losing shape
Mid Fade
- Starts at mid height of the head
- Balanced, versatile taper
- The most requested type in barbershops
- Works with casual and formal styles
- Good contrast without being extreme
Taper fade vs skin fade: key differences
Quick answer
The taper doesn't reach the skin: it is a soft, classic taper. The skin fade goes down to zero (skin visible). The taper is more formal; the skin fade is sharper and more urban.
The taper fade is a gradual taper that reduces the hair from the top downwards, but without reaching the skin. Some hair always remains at the sides, which gives a more conservative and natural look. It is common in classic cuts, long beards and formal styles.
The skin fade takes that taper right down to the skin, creating maximum contrast. It needs more upkeep but gives a cleaner, more modern finish. It is the favourite for urban styles, streetwear or cuts with plenty of texture on top.
In short: if you want something discreet and timeless, choose a taper. If you want visual impact and a modern cut, choose a skin fade.
Which fade to choose for your style?
Quick answer
Formal or classic: low fade or taper. Versatile and modern: mid fade. Maximum contrast and urban: skin fade. If in doubt, come to FADED and we will advise you.
- Formal style / workplace: low fade or taper fade. Elegant without drawing too much attention.
- Everyday casual style: mid fade. Balanced, easy to maintain and goes with almost everything.
- Urban / streetwear style: skin fade or mid fade with texture on top.
- Classic style with a long beard: taper fade or low fade. Pairs well with a well-kept beard.
- Curly or afro hair: low fade or mid fade. The skin fade also works, but the curl on top needs more care.
- Fine or low-volume hair: mid fade or low fade. Avoid the skin fade if the contrast leaves the top too exposed.
If you are unsure, the best thing is to come to the barbershop and talk to the barber. At FADED Barbershop we advise you with no obligation.
Frequently asked questions about fades
How often do I need to get a fade redone?
A skin fade needs upkeep every 2–3 weeks to keep the taper clean. A mid fade or low fade can last 3–4 weeks without losing shape. A taper fade lasts longer, up to 4–5 weeks.
Does a skin fade hurt?
No. A skin fade is done with clippers and a razor on the sides, just like a standard shave. It doesn't hurt if the skin is well moisturised and the barber works precisely.
Can I combine a fade with a beard?
Yes, in fact it is the most common combination. The fade on the sides and a well-defined beard make for a very polished look. At FADED you can ask for the Premium Pack (30€), which includes haircut + beard + eyebrows + facial cleanse.
